Excel File Locked

I'm building a package that has a Data Flow which reads an Excel File using the Excel Source connection - during development I hit errors in steps after the excel read. This is causing the excel file to be locked up and the next run fails on excel connection problem. If I go to Excel I can't open the file either. I have to exit BIDS and then file gets released. Is there any setting / different approach that would prevent this from happening?

thx

I doubt there is a setting - its just unfortunate I guess.

This probably won't happen if you run the package from the command line - so try that!

Excel Destination errors for fields > 255 chars

Hi:

Am trying to write sql2005 data to Excel. I have problems when data length exceeds 255 chars. I used a sample destination file with cells containing >255 chars where required, so that the Excel Destination external column was recognized as DT_Text.

My oledb source columns(external and output) are both varchar (1000).

Works fine , but fails when values>255 chars.

Error 0xC0202009 on ProcessInput.

I use SQL2005 enterprise SP2.

I tried changing the Oledb source output to Textstream, but that does not work at all.

How do I export values >255 chars to excel?

TIA

Kar

Hello,

could you try using Import/Export wizard and saving the package it produces? It will likely use DT_STR on the source, DT_TEXT on the destination and insert a data conversion (DT_STR->DT_TEXT).

HTH.|||

Hi:

Using Varchar(Max) in the SQL table works both ways(excel source and excel destination) without any need to convert. I used the Import wizard as suggested, and alllowed it to create a new SQL table. Thanks for the tip.

Kar

|||

Hmmm, I rejoiced too soon.

Using varchaar(max) in SQL Destination works in the normal case, when the column contains >255 chars in the reference rows (as set by the GuessTypeRows registry value).

However, if the column contains <255 rows, then I get error 0xC0208265 - Failed to retrieve long data for Column.

My problem is that I have multiple xls files from which I import data to SQL. Now most files would have a given column with data >255 chars, but maybe one of the files has that column with all values <255 chars.

I thought I would just convert everything to text, and then use a Text File Source. Problem is that "Excel Automation - Save as text" gives me a series of hashes for cells with >255 chars.

So now I am stuck, and the only inelegant solution is to add a dummy first row to each excel and set guessTypeRows to 1 and force excel to get at least one cell>255 chars for all files..

UGH.

How do I make sure the package works for all cases? Somebody please help me!

TIA
Kar

Well, you can either go with your solution or try to build two packages if you know which Excel files will have <255 char columns.

Thanks.

ex.Message in debug mode is much shorter

Exception ex.Message I am getting in debug mode calling AcquireConnection is much shorter than the logged message in run time because all the errors come to output window in debug. Is there any way to get all these errors description from exception object in debug time to be able to parse it?

Thanks.

What you are saying does not make sense. The exception details will always bee the same debug or otherwise. The exception will only have one message, but you suggest there should be more. You could check the InnerException property of the caught exception, that may give something. I really do not understand how you are describing the two modes, with all errors or otherwise.

Is this perhaps to do with a UI? If so try the IErrorCollectionService interface. This allows you to get details of the fire error, warning methods called from the IDTSComponentMetaData90.

|||

Thanks for your reply and sorry for not making this question clear.
Will try to explain what actually I am actually looking for.

Below the simplified piece of my code in script task
Try
connection = connMgr.AcquireConnection(Nothing)
Catch ex As Exception
'Dts.Events.FireError(1, ex.TargetSite.ToString, ex.Message, "", 0)
MsgBox(ex.Message)
Dts.TaskResult = Dts.Results.Failure
End Try

Deliberately providing wrong psw for the connection and running the package in debug (F5)
In the msgbox reading the message "Exception from HRESULT: 0xC0202009".

Running the same package in "Start Without Debugging" (ctrl+F5), getting the more informative msgbox:

Error: 0xC0202009 at EnvConfig, Connection manager "DB_SOURCE": An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80040E4D.
An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult: 0x80040E4D Description: "Communication link failure".
An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult: 0x80040E4D Description: "TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.
".
An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult: 0x80040E4D Description: "Login failed for user 'DTSUSE'.".

The message looks like as a collection that what I am actually looking for to get access to. I need to extract only latest description like "Login failed for user 'DTSUSE'" and log it.

Thanks, Vadim.

Ok, now I see. This is not a SSIS issue, rather a .Net programming issue, in so much as it is actually bad practice to just catch the general Exception type. It is also very common, we all do it! Really you should catch targeted exceptions as they are richer classes that have more information relevant to the exception thrown.

If you catch the SqlException type you can get access to the Errors collection, that is a property on the SqlException class. That will give you that extra level of detail, both for the messages and things like the source.

It's chicken and egg. The reason you get the messages is because you cleared
the event log. SQLAgent monitors the event log for alerting purposes and
when you clear it, it has to try and re-establish its monitoring. However,
if you don't use SQL Agent alerts you can delete the demo alerts that are
created when you install SQL Server (they all start with Demo) and you will
no longer get these messages (because with no alerts defined there is no
reason for SQL Agent to monitor the event log)

Event log Errors

I am getting an odd error being logged in the event log to do with reporting services.

Report Server (MSSQLSERVER) cannot connect to the report server database.

We have 2 servers in the farm running on IA64, these errors are showing on both nodes they are connecting to a clustered SQL server instance. The odd thing is though, everything seems to be working! Reports run, the web viewer works, we are able to deploy reports from VS2005. So i am at a bit of a loss as to where and why we keep getting these errors.

Thanks in advance

Can you connect to the report server using a browser?

What is the setting for the reportserver virtual directory security in IIS. Is it set to windows authentication?

|||

Yes we can connect via a browser both remotely and locally.

Yes it is set to Windows Auth, the virtual directory is on the local C Drive.

|||Is the event showing up after a reboot, or does it repeat consistently?|||They still show up after a reboot, they seem to be fairly random a group all at once or just one every so often.

Event log error after SQL 2005 developer install

I get the following errors in my application event log on each reboot after
installing SQL Server 2005 developer edition.
..NET Runtime Optimization Service (clr_optimization_v2.0.50727_32) - Failed
to compile: Microsoft.ReportingServices.QueryDesigners, Version=9.0.242.0,
Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89845dcd8080cc91 . Error code = 0x80070002
and

to compile: Microsoft.ReportingServices.QueryDesigners, Version=9.0.242.0,
Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89845dcd8080cc91 . Error code = 0x80070002
While they are the same error, it appears twice right after a reboot.
Any ideas? Is this a problem?
jim
Jim,
I am getting the same error and was wondering if you had any luck with
finding an answer or explaination to what this is?
Thanks -

Event log error after SQL 2005 developer install

I get the following errors in my application event log on each reboot after
installing SQL Server 2005 developer edition.
.NET Runtime Optimization Service (clr_optimization_v2.0.50727_32) - Failed
to compile: Microsoft.ReportingServices.QueryDesigners, Version=9.0.242.0,
Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89845dcd8080cc91 . Error code = 0x80070002
and
.NET Runtime Optimization Service (clr_optimization_v2.0.50727_32) - Failed
to compile: Microsoft.ReportingServices.QueryDesigners, Version=9.0.242.0,
Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89845dcd8080cc91 . Error code = 0x80070002
While they are the same error, it appears twice right after a reboot.
Any ideas? Is this a problem?
jimJim,
I am getting the same error and was wondering if you had any luck with
finding an answer or explaination to what this is?
Thanks -

Looking for the 995 error turns up a few instances such as
http://tinyurl.com/yqh2pr although there doesn't seem to be an absolute
reason/answer. Is there any indications of a problem with the devices earlier
in the event log? What does the SQL Server error log say?

Looking at other posts the most likely cause is third party backup software,
if you are using a product then you will need make sure you have the latest
patches and if the problems persist contact the vendor.

At first I thought it was drive space issue, but there is plenty of space on
the backup volume. Any ideas?

Thanks for finding that post. I put local system back into the sysadmin
group. We'll see if it starts to work again.

Hello,
I keep getting these errors in Event Log.
Source: MSSQLSERVER
A fatal error occurred while reading the input stream from the network. The
session will be terminated.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Has anyone seen these events? I couldn't find any information on how to fix
this error and if you know anything about it would you please share?
Thanks
Anyone?
