Examining event logs hangs Enterprise Manager

Anyone know a reason why trying to read the event logs hangs Enterprise Manager?
Do I have to read them threw Enterprise Manager?
Thanks,

Now for the $60,000 question, where do I find the SQL Server event logs...|||Probably the best thing to do is to start a new event log. This should allow your old log to open more quickly, or you can open and edit it through another application.

Normally a new event log is started only when you stop and restart SQL Server, but there is an SQL command that will do it as well. I make the command part of my weekly maintenance so that the log never grows to big.

No, I can't remember the command right now, but if you can't find it and nobody else posts it I'll look it up at my office tomorrow.

The command is : sp_cycle_errorlog

Default path where you would find the logs is the Logs directory in your MS SQL installation folder|||Were you talking about the event logs or the sql server logs ? Ever growing Transaction logs

We are experiencing an ongoing transaction log problem
that is driving us crazy. I would appreciate any help you
can provide.
We are currently running an application from a company
called Aelita that collects event log data from our
servers and stores them in an SQL 200 database on a
Windows 2000 server. Our database is currently 160 GB in
size with approximately 140 million records. The system
only has five users who during the day only generate
reports on security and incidents from the event logs in
the database. They can not manipulat the data. They have
been told to stay out of the database until further
notice.
Here's the problem: the transaction logs grow
continuously until they get over 300GB in size and fill up
the partition they are on. There are no users on the
system, no data being collected and no reports being
generated. In theory, there should be no transactions
being porocessed except for any built in SQL processes
that are running. I've run performance monitor against
that database and can see that we are averaging between
300 and 400 transactions per second on the database during
the day. These transactions are filling up the transaction
logs everyday. I can't figure out what is running and
generating the transaction logs.
I've run the profiler in EM, but can't seem to get good
data out of it. I see a number of begin/commit
transactions associated with an OBjectName "Ghost", but I
have no idea what that is or if that is even the problem.
I can't tell which process is running out of control and
causing the problem. The problem continues after shutting
down SQL or rebooting the server. I need to figure out
what is running and stop it.
Because of on going problems, we have shut down the Aelita
application from collecting data. Normally the data is
collected during the night. We haven't collected data for
a couple of weeks while we attempt to solve our problem.
config:
Windows 2000 SP4
SQL 2000 SP 3
IBM server - four processors
4 GB RAM
three 400GB data partitions located on an IBM Shark SANDave,
Take a look to see if you have any scheduled jobs running that may be
causing the transactions such as a reindexing job etc. You should be able
to tell thru sp_who2 what spid is running and then use DBCC INPUTBUFFER to
see what it is doing. Profiler should be able to tell as well but I suspect
you don't have the right event classes selected. Chec sp:completed, batch
completed and rpc completed to get a start. If your not doing regular log
backups you may want to think about setting it to Simple recovery mode as
well.

Right click on the server in enterprise manager, click on the security
tab, then change the audit level to whatever you desire. I recommend you
leave it at Failure for a production system as a minimum, but I
personally prefer to log all activity.
You can change the event log size in Event Viewer, and you can tell it
to write over old log records so it doesn't fill up. I usually expand
mine to at least 10MB.

Event Log and SQL Server Agent

Hi Helper,
When I boot me server up, I always get an alert that says at least one
service or driver failed. I checked all of the logs in the event viewer.
The error is in the Application log. When I look at the properties of the
error I get a dialog box that has the description "Unable to read the
eventlog (Reason: The event log has changed between read operations). The
Source is SQLSERVERAGENT, the Category is Alert Engine, and the Event ID is
318.
How do I resolve this problem? What can I do to prevent getting this Alert
message and get this fixed?
Thanks,
KeithThat's nothing to worry about.
That message isn't the service failing to start, have a look in Event Viewer
(System). This is more likely to contain the service that's failing.

message' in the following manner.
In Control Services :-
Set the startup of SQLServerAgent and MSSQLServer to Manual
Stop both services
Clear all 3 Event Logs.
Reboot the Server.
The SQL Services are now not trying to start, if the Service didn't start
message appears it definalty hasn't come from SQL.
Alternitavly, Control Panel / Servcies.
Look at every service, ensure those with a Startup Type of AutoMatic are
all Status = Started.
If you have any Automatic starters that are not Started -- bingo...

Hello there
I am wondering what I should look for, in the events logs (I have the
security audit enabled to log to event logs) for successful and not
successful connections using windows authentication ?
does anybody know ?If successful or not and if using Windows or SQL logins,
they all log to the application event log under the same
event id of 17055

Hi John,
the backup did not succeed but stalled at some 8MB with running endlessly
and not consuming disk space. I put the database in single user mode, run
"backup log with truncate_only", then shrinked the log file, finally
performed a full backup of course.
The database is running again now. But the eventlog entries are still not
clear to me...
Thanks anyway

|||Thanks for your help Russell. In carefully reviewing the doc on the link and
comparing to my situation, I find that I meet the criteria in all instances
and still the error. I also notice that the specific error mentioned is 8344
about which there is a LOT of information available, just not 8335.

Event ID 107 Problem

Hi,

I'm having problem with getting rid of the schedule and Delivery Processor error I'm currently seeing in the event logs. Can someone help me out here? error below:

Domain\Servername : F Schedule and Delivery Processor_107_E: Schedule and Delivery Processor cannot connect to the report server database.

Help!!!!!!

Make sure your have database connections set up correctly. Redo the "database connection" panel in the config tool.|||

I have this problem too, but it is because I uninstalled SQL Server and Reporting Services from this machine. I just have this ghost left and complaining - how do I get rid of the "Schedule & Delivery Processor"?

Thanks

Hans

|||You shouldn't get an error like that if RS windows service is removed. Check if SQL reporting services is really removed in service control manager.
